National Snow and Ice Data Center - The National Snow and Ice Data Center, or NSIDC, is a United States information and referral center in support of polar and cryospheric research. NSIDC archives and distributes digital and analog snow and ice data and also maintains information about snow cover, avalanches, glaciers, ice sheets, freshwater ice, sea ice, ground ice, permafrost, atmospheric ice, paleoglaciology, and ice cores.

Ice sheet - An ice sheet is a mass of glacier ice that covers surrounding terrain and is greater than 50,000 km² (19,305 mile²). The only current ice sheets are Antarctic and Greenland; during the last ice age at Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) the Laurentide ice sheet covered much of Canada and North America, the Weichselian ice sheet covered northern Europe and the Patagonian Ice Sheet covered southern Chile.

Ice age - An ice age is a period of long-term downturn in the temperature of Earth's climate, resulting in an expansion of the continental ice sheets, polar ice sheets and mountain glaciers ("glaciation"). Glaciologically, ice age is often used to mean a period of ice sheets in the northern and southern hemispheres; by this definition we are still in an ice age (because the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets still exist).

Italian ice - Italian ice (also known as granita, granite, Italian water ice, or water ice in areas with large Italian-American populations) is a frozen dessert made by mixing flavorings (typically fruit juices but also coffee and chocolate) with ice. Italian ice, unlike shaved ice products, is very smooth.

In Under Ice, William M. Leary examines the evolution of Arctic submarine operations in the U.S. Navy, a little-known but significant area of national security concern. Through the career of Waldo Lyon, he chronicles the problems of under-ice navigation Ice and the development of Cold War naval strategy. Today, under-ice operations are standard for submarines of the United States Ice and other nations. Leary provides informative treatments of the early problems with under-ice navigation; the Boarfish experimental dives; the Skate's surfacing through ice cover at the North Pole; Ice and the drama-packed patrol of Seadragon, the first submarine to pass under an iceberg Ice and make a submerged voyage through the fabled Northwest Passage. He ably delineates the roles of such other actors in the drama as Robert McWethy, executive officer of the Burton Island Ice and long-time supporter of Lyon'swork; the "fabulous patrol" of Sargo; CDR Joseph Skoog, who played poker while his crew transited the dangerous Arctic waters at high speed.
